Red Gum

This iconic timber is the perfect choice for anyone who wants their home to feature a hardwood that is uniquely Australian. Featuring an unmistakable deep red tone and remarkable durability, the River Red Gum is used for a wide range of purposes, from furniture to heavy construction.

Aptly named for its stunning red wood, the Red Gum ranges from light pinks through to deep reds that are almost black in appearance – depending on the age and weathering.

Our Red Gum is ideally suited to oils, which lead to a brilliant finish no matter what the application. Polishes, stains and paints can also be used to achieve your desired look.

Strong and Durable

Hard and dense, this timber can be difficult to nail and screw (though glue is an excellent solution) – however, what it lacks in ease of use it makes up for in durability. This hardwood is incredibly strong, lasting up to 25 years in below ground applications, and well over 40 years for above ground use. It’s also a naturally termite resistant timber, making it versatile and well loved by builders, landscapers and other industries.

Range of Traditional Applications

As a timber that has been used across Australia for a number of decades, it is well suited to a range of modern and traditional applications. Ideal for fencing and sleepers, it can be used to create boundary fences or retaining walls; or used for domestic and commercial decking or flooring. If you’re looking for a feature timber for fit-outs, joinery or furniture, Red Gum is a good choice here as well.

FAQ

Is your Red Gum ethically sourced?

We know that part of providing our customers with the highest quality timber means ensuring the timber is sustainably sourced. One of the most widely planted eucalypts across the world, Red Gum is readily available from designated plantations, and we only stock timber that has been logged in accordance with Australian Forestry Standards. You can be confident that our Red Gum is perfect for anyone who wants to do their bit for the planet as well as use an iconic, attractive and durable hardwood.

Can I use Red Gum in fire prone areas?

Whilst many people love the look and feel of hardwood timber, they are often concerned that they can’t use it within their home as they live in a bush fire prone area. However, Red Gum is a low combustible material, and can be used in areas where the threat of fire is a concern – it’s perfect for areas that are rated between BAL 12.5 to 29.
